GOAT MILK is the star of this amazing soap. The cream that is present in goat milk helps boost the moisturizing quality of goat milk soaps. We use late lactation milk which is super high in butterfat. Goat milk soap will not dry your skin out like many other soaps. Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids which help remove dead skin cells from your skin. Goat milk is high in Vitamin A, which helps repair damaged skin tissue. Vitamin A can help to reduce lines and wrinkles, control acne, and provide some psoriasis relief. We work hard to make a No Cull approach to farming work, and any time we can subtract an expense means we are able to get closer to making the business run well so we can meet all the needs of the goats even as they age. By taking a goat to dinner, you are helping the farm's bottom line and making a goat happy every day of the year. We worked with a really cool program through Maine Farmland Trust for farmers this winter to break down farm expenses and time spent making products and working with the herd. The goal was to try to come up with realistic prices that reflect money and time put in so that if we ever did some wholesale we would have solid numbers in mind. What we realized, in the end, is that the formula doesn't exactly work for our tiny farm or goats making a tiny amount of milk, especially since we are committed to the most humane practices and a no cull approach where every goat is treated like a prized pet. We realized we would have to charge about $20 a container of cheese. But after the shock, we realized that we didn't want to count our time spent as part of the calculation, because there is nothing we would rather be doing than this work. Nothing better than connecting with our herd and the amazing people who love them. Our goal has always been to find creative ways to cover some expenses like Open Farm Days and Donation Yoga Classes that enrich the community and allow the farm to cover expenses and generate a profit. We have tried to make the farm a small scale version of the openness we want to see in the world: in 2020, even when visiting was limited, we added extra barn cams which people watch around the world and took over 20 school groups on free Zoom field trips to the farm. Rocky rested his head in the man's palm and was still and quiet for the whole 45 minute visit! This little wether would be culled on many dairy farms, but on that day and many others the joy he brought was invaluable. Many dairy farm kill all bucklings as they are born because they don't have the space to raise them up for meat, or the market to sell them. We neuter most of the boys and find homes for them in pairs as pets. We often get cards around the holidays from people who can not imagine their lives without these furry friends. Rocky was the smallest, weakest goat we have ever had born on the farm. We did not expect to be able to save him. He was as limp as a dishtowel in his first hours of life...but after being tube fed colostrum, he rose up and began nursing from his dam Moonspot on his own! Can't you taste a difference in food made with pure love? We can. Many people say they do not think they like goat cheese, then when they try ours they change their mind! Bonnie and Don Pedro were our first goats ever. We got them because our oldest daughter insisted that we were farm people and if we didn't hurry up and get some animals, she would never be able to tell her kids she grew up on a farm. She was in middle school then, and is in college now. In the time between, we have grown the herd to 31, built a cheese kitchen and birthed many, many sweet kids! These two goats will always hold a special place in our hearts for setting us on a path we could have never imagined 12 years ago! Bonnie was the first goat who died in our herd. Goats in our herd move in families. Sometimes 4 generations of does nap together in the sun. We can not imagine culling older goats or baby goats, or pulling kids at birth, as this would ruin the joy of watching these families together. We allow our kids to spend ever day with their dams nursing as much as they want and only separate them at night to give the moms a break and to help the kids learn to eat grain and hay before they go to new homes. Hope completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training program in 2017 with Sacred Seeds and now leads yoga at the farm where sometimes up to 80 people gather in the field to downward dog with goats and try goat cheese and snuggle babies after practice. welcome educational visits from groups of all sizes and all ages. We have been classroom teachers for 25 years and are enjoying the opportunity the farm provides to connect people to their food sources in meaningful ways. We can work with schools, nursing homes, daycares, tour groups, workplaces and families to design an educational experience geared specifically to your needs and interests. Your Farm Visit might include: pasture time, tasting of products, games in the field, acting out a goat related story with our goat kids, time to hold goat kids, Cheese making, a goat milking demo, learning about the animals on our farm, animal care and our products. Prices depend on the size of a group, the length of the visit and what you would like to be part of your experience while at Sunflower Farm. Minimum $200. per visit. Some groups in the past have come to do sketch work for art class, to write in journals, to have a physical experience as a break from desk work, and to learn more about small farming in Maine. Families sometimes come for a crash course on goat ownership so they can learn to clip hooves, milk a goat and ask lots of questions. Come have a tasty and memorable afternoon learning how to make cheese with other fun adults from May-November! Check our calendar and Facebook page for upcoming classes. The cost is $60. a person for 2 hours. We will go over the process for chevre and feta, make a quick Farmer's cheese, make cajeta, and mix up some chevre of your own design for you to take home. (Cool ingredient ideas or edible decorations? Bring them along...but we'll have lots here.) You'll leave with lots of treats and the ability to make cheese at home. If you like, you can help out with evening milking (and goat snuggling) before heading home for supper. Can also do more simple class for groups looking to learn a bit about milk and cheese and who want to mix up their own chevre to bring home. This activity would be 1 hour and cost $30. per person.
