Sunflower Farm Creamery

Nigerian Dwarf Dairy

Welcome to Sunflower Farm - where all the romance of farm life is still very much a reality. Looking for delicious local cheese made in small daily batches? You have come to the right place. Depending on the time of year, our feta, chevre, caramels, fudge and cajeta is available at Eventide Specialties in Boothbay Harbor & Walnut Hill Market in N. Yarmouth. You may also come directly to the farm Fri-Sun 10-6 to enjoy products the self serve fridge and to watch the goats grazing in the field.

We giggle when folks visiting ask us if all the goats have names. Not only do they all have names, they all have distinct calls we know even from the kitchen, they each have preferences for their favorite treats, and places they most love to be scratched. In the milkroom each mama has their own approach to our time together: Matilda likes to be milked without her head closed in to the head gate. GoGo insists that she be milked one side at a time. After Rosemary is milked, she waits on the milk stand for a few minutes of love before she is ready to hop down and go about her day.

There are lots of hot words in the sustainable food movement. Some mean very different things depending on who is using them and for what purpose, but for us, “local” dairy products are unique because each bite is intimately connected to the way the animals at our farm live. Even a town over, the goats are eating different grass, enjoying a different breeze, their milk is not from Stella and May and Sonnet. We find great joy in sharing our lovely goat herd with visitors so that when they eat our chèvre or feta or caramels, they taste even better because they are remembering a sunny summer day in the field with our herd. Hopefully you can taste the love.

We are a small state licensed Nigerian Dwarf Dairy. Our animals are treated like queens and the result is delicious cheese. It is simple, fresh, creamy and has no strong goatie taste.

We believe in selling only fresh cheese so we do not freeze our products or add preservatives. Our chevre, feta and caramel will be available May-January each year. From February-April the goats will be bred and resting up for kidding season in April & May. Goat kids are for sale each spring.

Becoming licensed was an exciting process which included meeting with our state milk inspector, drawing up the plans to convert a garage space between our house and barn, a year of building and finally in August 2012, our inspection! This year I am hand milking 18 goats and both Chris and I are teaching high school in Saco. We get great milk and cheese test results from the state.

Because they are new to the scene, many wonder about the Nigerian Dwarf Goat’s Dairy Quality. Those who work with them know they are easy to milk, cost less to feed, and produce almost twice as much cheese per gallon of milk because they have the highest butterfat content of any dairy goat. As an added bonus, their size makes them easy for any person young or old to handle. Add all this to the fact that they can be bred any time of the year, making year round milking and cheese production possible, and they are perhaps the most versatile milking goat on the scene!

We want to sell cheese that tastes like summer: fresh memorable, and as delicious as a day spent with friends. Stop by to get some for your next dinner, visit with family or picnic. While you are at the farm, visit the animals and cheese kitchen, then you will see the whole process and know the product is something you can feel wonderful about eating.

Feta- Feta is a lovely cheese- soft, salty and tasty. Ours gets lots of compliments for being nothing like you might buy in the grocery store and everything like you might taste in Greece.  Our neighbor told us he used to be sent off for the day as a child in Greece with a big hunk of bread, a slab of feta and a fresh tomato. I think of that romantic image every time I slice our feta.  $7.00 for 5 oz. container of cubes.  You can marinate yours to keep it awhile on your counter in a glass jar, or keep it in the fridge as is and enjoy by the date on the container.
